I’m sure as we go along with our schooling that certain folk songs will pop up in my memory and I will want to teach them to the kids! This week as I’m getting ready for week 2 with the book Paddle to the Sea, I thought a great song to sing with the kids would be the Canoe Song! I may eventually add a formal lesson to the folk song, but for now it is just going to be a song taught by rote.
(If you’re not sure what “rote” means, it is when no music is given to the child. They simply sing by echoing you.)
You can watch my demonstration of teaching this song by rote by viewing my Facebook Live video! It is long because it’s giving some background on some music education ideas and it’s meant more for the mom/teacher to watch instead of just showing to your kids! Watch it here!
I’m sorry in the video my white board was flipped! LOL! Here’s a basic illustration of what I made for a visual while teaching the song:
Watch my video for an explanation on why I drew the markings on the lyrics! Body percussion is such a great way to move kinetically while keeping the beat and time awareness!
Here are some wonderful YouTube videos of the song!
And this song is not the traditional folk melody, but a GORGEOUS filmed music video of an original song.
