I have started collecting my thoughts on the folk songs that are listed on the 2016-2017 list for Ambleside Online and put together a lesson plan using Solfege for this fun Call and Response Sea Shanty!
I plan to modify some of these ideas in the co-op we will be starting in the fall, as well as take some little pieces of the ideas I’ve listed and implement them with my kids! Obviously for several lessons we will just be singing and listening to the song and joining in on the responses! But, if you feel a desire to “drill” into the theory of the music with your children, feel free to use the resources and lesson ideas I’ve listed! CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE PDF LESSON PLAN!
I may try to put up a video of the kids participating in the lesson! It is such a catchy tune! In fact, Yosemity Sam even sings it in this cartoon!
Even if you just want to print off the lyric sheet to modify for your own lessons, please do!!! I used a version of the song that I felt had more appropriate lyrics for my kids! There are plenty of lyric sites that will give you different versions if you want to try to match one to a recording! For our family, we do love listening and singing along to the recordings, but there is no substitute for the pure sounds of unaccompanied mom and kids singing for enjoyment!
